The Best Places to Apply Fragrances

Including places you may not have considered

Most of us will give a lot of thought over which cologne or perfume we will select to become our signature fragrance. We’ll scour over the latest online fragrance reviews, or we’ll allow ourselves to be spritzed at the counter of our favorite store or we’ll follow the recommendation of a friend in making this important decision. Yet, as careful as some of us are in making the choice of what fragrance to wear, many of us won’t even think twice when it comes to where to apply our favorite cologne or perfume. We all know that the common places to apply fragrances are the wrists, ears, neck, etc. However, by limiting the application of your fragrance to these areas you may be missing out on some other enticing possibilities. Here are a few other places to apply fragrances that many experts recommend.

  • In Your Hair: Perfume applied here (lightly so as not to dry out the hair) latches onto hair fibers which in turn makes the scent last longer.
  • Inside Your Elbows: This pulse point is a nice change of pace from spritzing the wrist yet it is just as effective.
  • Behind Your Knees: Veins are particularly close to the skin in this area of the body thus it is a pulse point that generates heat. This heat helps to project the scent outwards.
  • In Your Belly Button: The navel radiates heat and this is essential for pushing the scent of colognes and fragrances outwards.
  • Down Your Calves: Try spritzing your favorite fragrance on the sides of your calf. The friction cause by your walking about will help to radiate the scent. This spot is also particularly effective if you wear shorts or a skirt.
  • On Your Feet: This off sounding place is not so odd when you think of it. Your feet are in motion during most of the day, so what better way is there to leave your scent gently wafting behind you as you travel?

In a nutshell, giving a little more thought to where you apply your fragrance will help in several ways. The first is that it will make the scent all the more potent if you maximize your body’s pulse points, etc. The second is that it can make your fragrance last longer and therefore give you more “bang for the buck”. Finally, by following some of these suggestions you will be following tried and true methods that many experts have researched and have found to be maximum application points.

The Most Appealing Scents for Men and Women

Physical attraction is a phenomenon that engages all the senses not the least of which is smell. In fact, in the animal kingdom scent is the key method for finding and attracting a mate. For us it is a bit more subtle but still a driving force when it comes to what appeals us to the opposite sex. But it is not just about smelling clean or smelling good. Certain aromas are known to have a greater appeal than others. Perfumes and colognes that mimic food aromas, for example, are among the fragrances that have the strongest appeal. Here are few powerful aromas that are bound to be noticed by the opposite sex.

Men’s Fragrances that Appeal to Women

  • Licorice:  This scent is said to greatly enhance arousal in women affect.  According to a study by Dr. Alan Hirsch this scent, which comes from anise, combines well with cola and with cucumber as well.  Cereus No.11 for Men is one such cologne that combines these powerful attractants.
  • Pumpkin Pie:  According to Hirsch, this scent raises female arousal by 11%. It can be found in Pumpkin Pie by Demeter.
  • Dark Chocolate:  Chocolate is one of the many food odors that appeal to both sexes but to women in particular according to some studies.  Ralph Lauren Big Pony Red #2 is an example of a fragrance that combines dark chocolate with a hint of black pepper.
  • Lavender, Sage and Pepper:  This powerful triumvirate of aromas balances a sense of tenderness with power increasing its appeal to women.  Dolce & Gabbana Pour Homme perfectly blends these aromas and adds to it dry notes of cedar wood.
  • Grapefruit, Vanilla:  This combination is intense but not overwhelming and mixed with an amber musk – as it is in Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male Terrible – captures the opposite sex’s attention with its contrasting aromas.

Women’s Fragrances that Appeal to Men

  • Vanilla:  According to the Hirsch study, Vanilla is one food aroma that highly appeals to men. For maximum appeal it is recommended that women combine vanilla with amber and musk as in Clean Skin 2.14 oz/ 60 mL Eau de Parfum Spray for Women.
  • Floral and Woodsy fragrances:  These fragrances according to Hirsch can be used to appeal to men.  Calvin Klein’s Secret Obsession and Tom Ford’s Black Orchid are two examples of perfume’s that combine floral and woodsy notes.
  • Spicy Florals/white wood:  Two perfumes that combine these notes include Lolita Lempicka’s Si Lolita and Daisy Marc Jacobs.

Yes, certain aromas will always be known to elicit a positive response in people more than do others.  Modern day perfumers know this and carefully look at every study on the psychology of smell and attraction. At Lily Direct we sell fragrances that will appeal to the opposite sex and will increase your appeal as well.

Great Perfume House Series- Houbigant

Great things and legendary people often begin; it is said, from humble beginnings. This is true of legendary perfume manufacturer Jean-François Houbigant and the great perfume house he began four centuries ago. Yes, that’s right the House of Houbigant has stood since 1775 and has lasted when many other perfume manufactures have not. Jean-Francois Houbigant was born in Paris, France on December 21, 1752 into the servant class which what was then a very rigid caste system. The class one was born into almost always set the trajectory of one’s life. However, Houbigant’s mother worked for royalty – Duchess of Charost – who it is said took favor upon and sponsored him. Houbigant grew to work his way through merchants and equally ambitious perfumers to grow his appreciation for naturally occurring, beautiful fragrances.

Eventually, after tutelage from his future father-in-law, the 23 year old Houbigant established the company that has endured into the 21st century. Houbigant was permitted, under law, “to make and sell all kinds of scents, powders, pomades, pastes to whiten and cleanse the skin, soaps, toilet-waters, gloves, mittens and skin material” and that he did. Almost immediately, Houbigant’s fragrances caught the attention of French nobility and distinguished itself from the many competitors of the time. In fact, it has been rumored – though not proven – that Queen Marie Antoinette actually carried two bottles of Houbigant’s cologne on her the day she was…dispatched from this world.

Through the rest of the 18th, 19th and 20th century, Houbigant has continue to innovate and achieve excellence in the creation of fragrances that are appreciated the world over. In fact, it is said that modern perfume making would not exist were it not for these innovations and were it not for the model set by Houbigant’s fragrances. Some milestone fragrances produced by this august house include:

Fougère Royale (1882). This is still the most popular men’s fragrance.

Le Parfum Ideal (1908). This fragrance was one of the first to seamlessly into synthetic ingredients into its formula without loss of scent quality.

Quelque Fleurs (1912). This is one of their most popular fragrances to this day.

Quelques Fleurs L'Original Perfume for Women by Houbigant

In 1973, Michele Perris began a fruitful collaboration with the House of Houbigant which continues to this day, Jean-François Houbigant may be gone but the humble experiment that began four centuries ago continues as the world’s most respected perfume house lives one. We honor the memory and achievements of Houbigant and Perris by carrying its Quelque Fleurs original fragrance for Women. We look forward to your trying this perfume for yourself.

What You Should Know About Perfume Allergies

With thousands of fragrances on the market, it is not only likely that some people will develop allergies to some perfumes, it is a certainty.  In fact, back in 1999 the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) identified 26 ingredients as allergens in perfume.  As a result of this, some 2 million people suffer allergic reactions to one of more of the many ingredients in perfume.  Some of the symptoms of perfume allergies include:

  • Headaches.
  • Difficulty breathing.
  • Worsening asthma symptoms.
  • Runny and stuffy nose.
  • Sneezing.
  • A skin allergy like contact dermatitis — an itchy, red rash that appears on the skin.

Fortunately only a small number of fragrances actually cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.  The allergens that do and that are also present in other cosmetics include Cinnamic alcohol, Eugenol, Hydroxycitronellal, Oak moss absolute and others.

Identifying a Perfume Allergy

The problem with identifying which ingredient in a particular perfume is causing an allergic reaction is tricky since there are so many ingredients in fragrance products.  The best way to identify the specific ingredient causing a reaction is by patch testing.  A positive patch test result to a particular fragrance indicates that you are allergic to one or more fragrance chemicals.  An estimated 1-2% of the general population is allergic to one or more fragrance ingredients.

Treating a Perfume Allergy

While some doctors doubt that the fragrance itself is the cause of most “fragrance” allergies and believe that these reactions caused by some ingredient in a particular perfume, there can be no doubt that fragrance sensitivity is on the rise.  The best way to treat an allergy once it has been identified is to stop using the perfume in question.  If that ingredient is common to other scent-based products that you use it is also advised that you stop using those items as well.  The next best way to treat a perfume allergy is with nasal antihistamines and corticosteroid medications.  Both can control allergy symptoms caused by these sensitivities.  Ultimately, discovering that you have an allergic reaction to a particular perfume may cause you to seek out what may be an even better, more compatible perfume.  At Lilydirect we have a vast selection of perfumes and other fragrances that you can experiment with until you find the right scent that is safe and that helps you make your own unique statement about who you are.  If you believe you are developing an allergy to any fragrance consult with a dermatologist so that he/she can narrow down the specific cause and can develop a course of treatment.

Scents to Wear While Camping

Summer has finally arrived and many of the more intrepid among us are heading out onto the campgrounds to commune with nature and enjoy the company of our friends and family.  Before doing so we carefully pack and plan our trips in order to get the maximum experience from our long awaited vacation in the wild.  We pack the usual supplies such as a tents, sleeping bags, canteens, cooking equipment etc.  However, as we pack our various camping accoutrements we should also take special care in which toiletries and personal items such as soaps, lotions, toothpaste, deodorants, colognes and perfumes, etc.  This is because we are no longer in our homes when we are camping.  We are among wildlife.  Bears in particular have a keen sense of smell and have been known to be attracted by certain scents they interpret may be food.  So, how does one maintain proper hygiene and not offend others with our scent yet at the same time not place a welcome mat out for bears?  Here are some tips:

Scents to Use in Camping Sites with Bears

Neutral scents:  Wear colognes, perfumes and deodorants that have a neutral scent.  A bear’s sense of smell is much stronger than dog’s.  They can even smell toothpaste from miles away.  Be careful not to wear overpowering fragrances in the wild.

Use a Bear Bag:  If you do pack scented items pack them in a bear bag and hang this in a tree to dissuade bears from coming into your tent.

Stay Clean:  Wash your body with a soap that has a neutral scent.

Scents to Use in Camping Sites without Bears

Peppermint Oil:  Ants hate the smell of peppermint and this essential oil deters them from ruining your meals.  Apply around your tent and container that hold your food.

Lavender Oil:  This essential oil is not only a great insect repellant but it also – in combination with Aloe Vera – can soothe rough skin.

Lemon, Eucalyptus, Citronella, Lemongrass oils:  The scent from these oils has been known to repel insects and is pleasant smelling to humans.  They can also be purchased as a mixture of the oils or separately.

Remember that as you go camping this year that Lily Direct has a variety of fragrances that are appropriate for all occasions.  Our fragrances are meant to be worn in settings as varied as intimate indoor situations or out in the wild with family and friends.

Play it Safe-Try the Mini Version First

Have you ever heard the phrase, “make a lap before you commit to a location”? Well it’s more than just a catchy line from one of our favorite movies. It’s actually a smart piece of advice to follow in many different situations in life; and it can definitely be applied when we’re talking fragrances.

Choosing a new fragrance is not a decision th"Lily Direct"at should be made lightly. And you should be especially choosy when you’re trying to pick your signature scent! Judging a scent based on a spritz in the air or on how it smells on someone else is a big mistake. Fragrances react to one’s body chemistry, so just because that Parisienne Perfume by Yves Saint Laurent smells delicious on your best friend that does not necessarily mean it will be the right scent for you. Likewise, if you spritz a little Hugo Element Cologne by Hugo Boss in the air and think it smells divine, you can’t be sure it will smell the same on you.

Testing out perfumes in a store is no easy task. A good rule of thumb when testing a new scent is to let it settle into your body for about 20 minutes before you decide whether you like the way you smell in it. Who has time for that when out shopping? Plus, this makes testing out more than one scent at a time impossible! So how’s a person ever going to find the right new scent for his or her unique body chemistry? Lily Direct has the solution.

Here at Lily Direct we offer mini versions—at great prices!—of some of the best perfume and cologne on the market.

Great Perfume Houses Part 12

I"Lily Direct"t’s about that time perfume lovers—time for our bi-weekly look into the history of some of the great perfume houses from around the world. This week, we’re going to take a look at the chic history behind the Givenchy Couture House…

Hubert James Taffin de Givenchy was born in 1927 to an aristocratic family in the French city of Beauvais. He showed an interest in fashion, fabrics, architecture and design from a young age and left his home at the age of 17 for the promise of opportunity in Paris."Lily Direct""Lily Direct"

In 1952, after 8 years of various apprenticeships under renowned designers, Hubert de Givenchy opened his first Couture House in Paris. Givenchy established his unique brand by launching a bold and beautiful separates collection.

Shortly after opening his Couture House, Givenchy met the woman who would become his iconic muse. He was sent to dress Audrey Hepburn for the movie “Sabrina” and it’s said that something just clicked between them. The two style icons went on to enjoy a 40-year friendship.

Givenchy’s first fragrance—which was released in 1957—was originally created as an exclusive homage to his muse.  L’Interdit Perfume by Givenchy is said to possess a unique mix of fashion, grace and spontaneity, much like the woman who inspired it. Even the name of the fragrance was inspired by Audrey Hepburn; upon learning that her personal fragrance would be released to the general public, Hepburn apparently shouted out this French exclamation which is akin to the English term “oh my!”

The next fragrance Givenchy released was a widely distributed men’s fragrance called Monsieur. Ever since it’s release in 1959, Monsieur has been considered the quintessential expression of French, masculine seduction and impeccable elegance.

Givenchy continued to release elegant fragrance after elegant fragrance for years. Hubert de Givenchy himself created Givenchy Gentlemen Eau de Toilette in 1975. 1984 saw the release of "Givenchy", which is a powerful and seductive fragrance for the multi-facetted woman…. To name each and every one of Givenchy’s exquisite fragrances would take an article all on its own.

Hubert de Givenchy sold his company to Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy in 1988, though he did not retire until 1995. But the elegance and glamour of the Givenchy name still lives on today.

You can find a wide selection of men’s and women’s Givenchy fragrances at prices you’ll love right here on Lily Direct—your home for all the discount fragrances your heart desires.

Great Perfume Houses Part 4

Welcome back! This is the 4th installment of our bi-weekly presentations of the great perfume houses from around the world. Today we take you to Paris for a look at the French high fashion and perfume house, Hermes.

The Hermes Fashion House has a rich and interesting history. Established in 1837 by Thierry Hermes, it was originally a harness making shop which soon expanded to include the manufacturing of saddles and other equestrian accessories. Over time, as the business was passed down through 5 generations of the Hermes Family, they moved into the high fashion world eventually manufacturing and selling luxury clothing, leather goods, accessories and fragrances for both men and women. This family owned label is the epitome of true class and teeming with tradition.

It wasn’t until the 1900’s that Hermes began to expand beyond equestrian accessories. In the 1920’s Emile-Maurice Hermes introduced, and patented, the zipper in France. The Hermes luxury fashion line began with leather handbags and clothing, including the patented zipper, and expanded from there. In 1924 Hermes established a presence in the United States and in 1929 they previewed their first women’s couture collection in Paris. Starting in the 1950’s, the Hermes Fashion House began releasing signature pieces such as the Kelly Bag made famous by actress Grace Kelly.

It wasn’t until 1951 that Hermes entered the fragrance world with Eau d’Hermes, a unisex perfume composed by Edmond Roudnitska. Ten years later Caleche, the label’s first women’s fragrance, was composed by Guy Robert and instantly transformed Hermes into one of the major players of modern perfumery. Since then, fragrance after fragrance has been released, each one confirming Hermes’ status as a heavy hitter in the fragrance world.

Here on Lily Direct we have a plethora of men’s, women’s and unisex Hermes fragrances at affordable prices for you to choose from. Some of our favorites include and Eau Des Merveilles Perfume for Women.

Success in a Bottle?

Did you ever wonder what makes a great man or woman great? Was he just born that way or is there an external force determining his greatness? Certainly greatness stems from multiple factors coming together in just the right way, but here at Lily Direct we like to think that scent is definitely one small factor that makes up that elusive greatness mixture. And when one perfume house has perfumed an extensive collection of history’s greatest names, and continues to perfume contemporary greats alike, you have to stop and ask yourself, is it something in the spritz?

The Creed perfume house has created a legacy of unrivaled scents, both commissioned and worn by a host of global royalty, politicians, movie stars and first ladies. It’s rumored that it Remarkable letters from King Geoge IIIall started with a bottle of ‘Royal English Leather,’ commissioned by King George III.

Today, over 200 years later, First Lady Michelle Obama has said she is a devoted fan of Creed perfumes. Over the last two decades and beyond a wealth of famous names— Winston Churchill, JFK, Frank Sinatra, Jackie Kennedy, Audrey Hepburn, Madonna and Julia Roberts…just to name a few—have either commissioned or worn Creed scents.

The list of famous Creed wearers is seemingly never ending: In 1920, at the request of Winston Churchill, ‘Tabarome Millesime’ was created; a take on the original ‘Tabarome’ fragrance, Churchill’s version contains notes of tobacco.

JFK is said to have worn ‘Vetiver.’

‘Spring Flower’ is said to have been commissioned for Hollywood starlet Audrey Hepburn in 1951. Since King George III there have been a plethora of European royals said to have commissioned scents from the Creed perfume house.

Don’t worry too much if you are an ordinary person who cannot commission a personalized scent, Creed has plenty of exquisite scents on the market. Many of the scents that were originally commissioned are later available to the general public. You can find great deals on Creed scents such as ‘Original Vetiver’, ‘Love in White’ and many more right here on the Lily Direct website. With so many great names wearing Creed scents, isn’t it worth it to see if you can find success in a bottle?
