The Most Appealing Scents for Men and Women

Physical attraction is a phenomenon that engages all the senses not the least of which is smell. In fact, in the animal kingdom scent is the key method for finding and attracting a mate. For us it is a bit more subtle but still a driving force when it comes to what appeals us to the opposite sex. But it is not just about smelling clean or smelling good. Certain aromas are known to have a greater appeal than others. Perfumes and colognes that mimic food aromas, for example, are among the fragrances that have the strongest appeal. Here are few powerful aromas that are bound to be noticed by the opposite sex.

Men’s Fragrances that Appeal to Women

  • Licorice:  This scent is said to greatly enhance arousal in women affect.  According to a study by Dr. Alan Hirsch this scent, which comes from anise, combines well with cola and with cucumber as well.  Cereus No.11 for Men is one such cologne that combines these powerful attractants.
  • Pumpkin Pie:  According to Hirsch, this scent raises female arousal by 11%. It can be found in Pumpkin Pie by Demeter.
  • Dark Chocolate:  Chocolate is one of the many food odors that appeal to both sexes but to women in particular according to some studies.  Ralph Lauren Big Pony Red #2 is an example of a fragrance that combines dark chocolate with a hint of black pepper.
  • Lavender, Sage and Pepper:  This powerful triumvirate of aromas balances a sense of tenderness with power increasing its appeal to women.  Dolce & Gabbana Pour Homme perfectly blends these aromas and adds to it dry notes of cedar wood.
  • Grapefruit, Vanilla:  This combination is intense but not overwhelming and mixed with an amber musk – as it is in Jean Paul Gaultier Le Male Terrible – captures the opposite sex’s attention with its contrasting aromas.

Women’s Fragrances that Appeal to Men

  • Vanilla:  According to the Hirsch study, Vanilla is one food aroma that highly appeals to men. For maximum appeal it is recommended that women combine vanilla with amber and musk as in Clean Skin 2.14 oz/ 60 mL Eau de Parfum Spray for Women.
  • Floral and Woodsy fragrances:  These fragrances according to Hirsch can be used to appeal to men.  Calvin Klein’s Secret Obsession and Tom Ford’s Black Orchid are two examples of perfume’s that combine floral and woodsy notes.
  • Spicy Florals/white wood:  Two perfumes that combine these notes include Lolita Lempicka’s Si Lolita and Daisy Marc Jacobs.

Yes, certain aromas will always be known to elicit a positive response in people more than do others.  Modern day perfumers know this and carefully look at every study on the psychology of smell and attraction. At Lily Direct we sell fragrances that will appeal to the opposite sex and will increase your appeal as well.

Take a Walk on the Lighter Side

We get it, heavy perfumes and colognes aren’t for everyone. But just because you are turned off by the Escada- Desire Me perfumes of the world, that doesn’t necessarily mean you dislike all fragrances. You may be surprised to learn that not all fragrances are so overpowering that they give you a headache, but it’s true. Chances are you just haven’t found the right light fragrance that tickles your fancy; but maybe we can help you with that! Below are some of our personal favorite light fragrances:

Au Thé Blanc by BVLGARIBVLGARI’s White Tea unisex perfume is known for its reinvigorating, antioxidant properties. Both men and women will appreciate its fresh, clean scent.

Clean Eau de Parfum: As the name suggests, Clean’s light and lovely line of fragrances offer a plethora of scents that will leave you smelling like a fresh breath of air. Clean stays away from irritating ingredients and uses hypoallergenic formulas in all of its fragrances.

Demeter Clean Skin Unisex Perfume: It’s probably safe to say that anything that has the word “clean” somewhere in the title is going to be a good option when you’re looking for non-perfumey fragrances; and Demeter’s Clean Skin Unisex Perfume is no exception. All of Demeter’s fragrances are less concentrated and free of any artificial color, extenders and preservatives.

These are just a few of our favorite fresh scents here at Lily Direct; but there are plenty of other fragrance options out there for those of you who prefer a lighter, less “perfumey” scent. And don’t forget, we have all of your favorite discount fragrances and then some!

Great Perfume Houses Part 18

So we meet again fragrance lovers. For this week’s installment of our bi-weekly exploration into the great perfume houses from around the world we are going to take a look at the man, the myth, the legend—Tom Ford

Thomas Carlyle Ford, born on August 27, 1961 in Austin, Texas, is not your typical fashion designer.

He did not grow up dreaming of designing clothes or mixing perfumes like most other big names in fashion did. Rather, Ford has always been a true Renaissance man; he spent his formative years jumping around from college to college and career to career. It was his year spent as an intern in Chloe’s press office that finally sparked Ford’s love of fashion.

With very little hands-on experience in the fashion world—and a degree in architecture—Ford cleverly talked his way into a position within the Gucci organization. In 1994, within just a couple years of getting a job with the fashion house, Tom Ford was promoted to Creative Director of Gucci where he remained until 2004. During his tenure with the company, Gucci acquired the house of Yves Saint Laurent and Ford was creative director of that label as well.

Once he parted ways with

Gucci, Ford launched his own line that would eventually include clothes, beauty products, eyewear and accessories. But Tom Ford first struck out on his own by introducing his inaugural fragrance, Black Orchid which became an instant classic among fragrance lovers everywhere. This launch was followed by a series of successful Tom Ford fragrances for both men and women. Some of our personal favorite scents include, Tom Ford Noir Cologne and Tom Ford White Patchouli Perfume.

A Scent for Every Occasion

You plan your outfit and accessories based on the occasion. Your work outfit for example will likely be very different than your date outfit; and your first date outfit is probably even very different than your 5th date outfit. You put a lot of thought into your fashion choices and your fragrances choice should be no different. Your scent is after all an extension of your style; perfume and cologne are invisible fashion accessories that you can smell.

So how does one decide which scent goes with which occasion? Maybe we can help…

Work Appropriate: It’s best to just apply a light spritz when heading off to work. You don’t want to overwhelm the entire office with your aroma, no matter how delicious it is. Your best bet is to go with a subtle, light, crisp scent with fresh notes. We would recommend Burberry Brit Sheer Perfume by Burberry for the perfect everyday work fragrance.

Casual Fun: The best choice for a casual scent is similar to your work scent—it should be light and crisp, but unlike the work scent it can be a bit bolder with stronger, perhaps citrusy or earthy, undertones. Have fun with the casual fragrance choice; pick a perfume or cologne that matches how you’re feeling that day. Very Hollywood by Michael Kors is definitely a fun option to consider.

Date Night: White, floral fragrances always scream romance. For a sexy but not too overwhelming scent, choose fragrances with iris or orange blossom notes. Pour Femme Intense by Dolce & Gabbana is the perfect scent for any date night.

Special Occasion: When you’re dressed to the nines and headed to an extra special event you want your aroma to match. You’ll definitely want to choose a warm, rich fragrance with woody, musky and/or spicy notes.  Spritz a little Si by Giorgio Armani on and you’ll turn heads—and noses.

Whatever the occasion, whatever fragrance you choose, Lily Direct has all the best discount fragrances you could ever want!

Great Perfume Houses Part 15

Welcome back perfume lovers. It’s about that time again; time for our bi-weekly exploration of the great perfume houses from around the w"lily direct"orld. This week we are staying in the United States to take a look at the history behind cosmetics giant, Estee Lauder

The Estee Lauder Company was founded in 1946 by Joseph and Estee Lauder. The company, which initially focused solely on skin care products, was founded under the belief that every woman can be beautiful. When they first started out, Estee Lauder only sold four skincare products door-to-door at local salons and hotels. Just two years after starting the company, Estee Lauder opened their first department store counter in Saks Fifth Avenue.

During its almost 70 years in business, Estee Lauder has acquired quite the portfolio of cosmetic companies. Clinique, Origins, MAC and Jo Malone are just a small sampling of the 25 companies that currently make up Estee Lauder’s diverse portfolio.

The company’s first fragrance was introduced in 1953; the scent was called Youth Dew and it was a bath oil that doubled as a perfume. After the launch of Youth Dew, the company began producing best-selling fragrance after best-selling fragrance. Some of our personal favorites include Sensuous Perfume by Estee Lauder and Pleasures Cologne by Estee Lauder.

Ms. Lauder may have passed away in 2004, but the company is still alive and well. Not only is the Estee Lauder Company still thriving in 2015, it is also still in the hands of the Lauder family. Today the company is run by Joseph and Estee’s two sons and three grandchildren.

This perfume’s comforting blend of jasmine, lily of the valet and bergamot blend seamlessly with its undertones of sandalwood, amber and musk. Cashmere Mist makes for the perfect everyday, Fall signature scent.

Euphoria Perfume by Calvin Klein: Light and dark blend perfectly in this mysterious scent. Your olfactory senses will love the wafts of pomegranate, persimmon, lotus blossom and black orchid. The dark finishes of violet, cream, liquid amber and mahogany make this the perfect date night fragrance.

Great Perfume Houses Part 13

Welcome back perfume lovers! It’s about that time again. For the 13th installment of our bi-weekly look into the great perfume house"discount fragrances"s from around the world we are going to take a little trip back to the late 1970’s to see how it all started for international fashion house—ESCADA

Escada was founded in 1978 by "Escada" in Munich, Germany. The Escada line was created to make elite haute couture more accessible; the idea was to offer top quality in fabrics, fit and workmanship at affordable prices.

Margaretha Ley wanted Escada to make a bold yet feminine statement. The imaginative design, sophisticated style and bright spirit behind the Escada collections, lined-up perfectly with the extroverted characteristics that defined the 1980s.

The first Escada fragrance, named after founder and designer Margaretha Ley, was released in 1990. The sensual, feminine perfume was introduced in a unique heart shaped bottle. The 1990s saw a boom in Escada fragrances, which were notable for their bright packaging and unusual bottle shapes.

Escada is often credited with helping establish the fruity-floral scent as a new fragrance category. They are also said to have pioneered the concept of seasonal limited edition fragrances. Escada’s summer fragrance lines have become some of the most successful fragrance lines in the perfume industry.

Whether you’re looking for a fun, flirty scent like Escada Born in Paradise Perfume, you want to draw that special someone in with, or you’re looking to make a bold statement with Desire Me Perfume by Escada—You’ll find exactly what you’re looking for, at great prices, within Lily Direct’s wide selection of .

Great Perfume Houses Part 12

I"Lily Direct"t’s about that time perfume lovers—time for our bi-weekly look into the history of some of the great perfume houses from around the world. This week, we’re going to take a look at the chic history behind the Givenchy Couture House…

Hubert James Taffin de Givenchy was born in 1927 to an aristocratic family in the French city of Beauvais. He showed an interest in fashion, fabrics, architecture and design from a young age and left his home at the age of 17 for the promise of opportunity in Paris."Lily Direct""Lily Direct"

In 1952, after 8 years of various apprenticeships under renowned designers, Hubert de Givenchy opened his first Couture House in Paris. Givenchy established his unique brand by launching a bold and beautiful separates collection.

Shortly after opening his Couture House, Givenchy met the woman who would become his iconic muse. He was sent to dress Audrey Hepburn for the movie “Sabrina” and it’s said that something just clicked between them. The two style icons went on to enjoy a 40-year friendship.

Givenchy’s first fragrance—which was released in 1957—was originally created as an exclusive homage to his muse.  L’Interdit Perfume by Givenchy is said to possess a unique mix of fashion, grace and spontaneity, much like the woman who inspired it. Even the name of the fragrance was inspired by Audrey Hepburn; upon learning that her personal fragrance would be released to the general public, Hepburn apparently shouted out this French exclamation which is akin to the English term “oh my!”

The next fragrance Givenchy released was a widely distributed men’s fragrance called Monsieur. Ever since it’s release in 1959, Monsieur has been considered the quintessential expression of French, masculine seduction and impeccable elegance.

Givenchy continued to release elegant fragrance after elegant fragrance for years. Hubert de Givenchy himself created Givenchy Gentlemen Eau de Toilette in 1975. 1984 saw the release of "Givenchy", which is a powerful and seductive fragrance for the multi-facetted woman…. To name each and every one of Givenchy’s exquisite fragrances would take an article all on its own.

Hubert de Givenchy sold his company to Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy in 1988, though he did not retire until 1995. But the elegance and glamour of the Givenchy name still lives on today.

You can find a wide selection of men’s and women’s Givenchy fragrances at prices you’ll love right here on Lily Direct—your home for all the discount fragrances your heart desires.

Unisex Fragrances: A Scent for Everyone

What’s feminine and what’s masculine? The line between these two ideas has been blurring more and more every day over the past few decades. In today’s world men are nannies—or “mannies”—and women are CEOs; it isn’t uncommon for your doctor to be a woman and your nurse to be a man; we see powerful women with male assistants every day now. The point is this: there are no longer quintessential male and female roles that we all strive to follow in society, so why should there still be such a focus on male and female scents in the fragrance world?

Here at Lily Direct we are big fans of the Unisex Fragrance. When you are free to choose what role you’d like to play in society, you should also be free to choose how you’d like to smell with no restrictions. While unisex scents are not a brand new idea, their mainstream popularity really took off in the 90’s—when androgyny was trendy—with CK One Unisex Perfume by Calvin Klein. Since then, we have seen a number of popular unisex fragrances hit the market. One of our favorite scents for men and women is "unisex fragrance"Voyage D’Hermes Unisex Perfume by Hermes; but don’t worry, if neither of these fragrances pleases your olfactory senses there are plenty of other unisex perfumes to choose from.

When unisex fragrances were first gaining popularity it was most common for the scents to have more traditionally masculine elements. Recently however, these scents have been taking a turn for the flowery and men don’t seem to mind it one bit. Even beyond the unisex world, some “men’s fragrances” are even starting to incorporate traditionally feminine elements. Gucci Guilty Intense Cologne by Gucci, for example, is formulated around an orange flower base and men love it.

So whether you’re a woman looking to wear a men’s fragrance, a man wanting to experiment with women’s perfume or either sex looking for the perfect signature unisex scent, Lily Direct has something for you! Check out our vast inventory of discount fragrances and find a fantastic scent at a price you’ll love.
